Da North House is a traditional two storey Shetland house located in the idilic coastal setting of Gletness on the east mainland. Having newly aquired the house, our clients has a number of improvements to make prior to moving in.

The original stone house was built around 1890s with six extensions over 1960s & 1990s. Although the extensions generally respected the original design, the logic of the internal layout had suffered and other bigger issues had not been addressed.
Our Brief included; improving the internal circulation besides a new extension for bigger living areas with large format windows, a new garage linked to house with sheltered entrance, an artist's studio and a metal workshop, energy efficiency upgrade of envelope and heating, future proofing energy supply systems, and while retaining its traditional charachteristics.
1. Introduction & Context Completed in 2026, this large extension transforms a private family home into a contemporary space for modern living. Designed to enhance daily life and connection to the garden, it balances respect for the existing architecture with a confident new identity.
2. Site & Concept Set within a mature landscape, the design responds to the site’s natural light and views. The concept unites old and new through clear geometry and material harmony, opening the house to the garden while maintaining its original character.
3. Design & Spatial Qualities A double-height living and dining space anchors the new addition, filled with daylight and framed by generous glazing. Brick, metal, and glass combine to create a refined dialogue between traditional and contemporary forms.
4. Sustainability & Technical Aspects Energy efficiency drives the design, with passive solar gain, natural ventilation, and high-performance insulation reducing energy use. Locally sourced, durable materials ensure longevity and low maintenance.
5. Outcome & Reflection The extension redefines the home as a light, flexible environment that connects seamlessly to its garden setting. It achieves a calm balance of sensitivity and modernity, enriching everyday life for its occupants.
